Om museet
The house on what is now Makartplatz, then Hannibalplatz, is documented since the early 17th century. It owes its nickname Tanzmeisterhaus (Dancing Master's House) to the court dancing master Johann Lorenz Spöckner, who gave dance lessons to the nobility here from 1711. In 1773 the Mozart family moved into a spacious apartment in the house, which quickly became a sociable meeting place in the city – with home music-making, card games and Bölzlschießen (a parlour target-shooting game).
Wolfgang Amadé Mozart lived here until he moved to Vienna in 1780. In a bombing raid in October 1944, a large part of the building was destroyed. In the surviving part, the Dancing Master's Hall with its stucco was restored in the 1950s and a memorial site was set up.
Reconstructed according to old plans, the house was reopened in 1996 as a museum of the International Mozarteum Foundation. The tour leads through the former living rooms and shows documents, instruments and pictures from the family's Salzburg period, including the famous family portrait by Johann Nepomuk della Croce. In the basement is the foundation's autograph vault, which is accessible only on special tours; on the mezzanine is the Mozart Sound and Film Collection.
Since the restoration, the wooden Magic Flute cottage has stood in the inner courtyard; it originally stood next to the Freihaustheater in Vienna and came to Salzburg in 1877. The permanent exhibition is complemented by changing special exhibitions on Mozart and his work.
