Om museet

The impetus came from Erwin Franz, founder of the Graz–Maria Trost electric railway, who in 1969 commissioned Gerhard Schweyer to bring historic Graz tram cars back. After two restored trailers proved very popular on a special excursion in spring 1970, the Tramway Museum Graz association was founded in 1971. That same year, the first special trains ran under its name to mark the closure of Graz line 2.

In 1980 the association moved into the railway's former depot at Mariatrost, at the present terminus of line 1. Since then the hall and the outdoor grounds have been gradually renovated and extended with two canopies for further vehicles. At first, cars from all over the world came into the collection; for lack of space, the focus is now on Graz vehicles, though one car each from Vienna and New York has been kept.

The association works on a volunteer basis in working groups that restore and maintain the vehicles, look after the photo and document archive, run an H0 model railway layout and put together exhibitions every year. With roadworthy vintage cars it regularly runs on the Graz network, for example on the Summer, Advent and Nikolo trams, and it also operates a historic bus.
