Om museet

The Geymüllerschlössel was built after 1808 as a summer residence for the Viennese wholesaler and banker Johann Jakob Geymüller in Pötzleinsdorf, at the time a village outside the city gates. The architect is unknown; as was fashionable then, the pleasure house mixes Gothic, Indian and Arabic stylistic forms.

In 1888 the textile industrialist Isidor Mautner bought the estate. After it was pledged to the Oesterreichische Nationalbank in 1929, his Jewish heirs lost all rights after the "Anschluss" in 1938 and had to flee; in 1944 the Deutsche Reichsbank took over the house. After the war it went to the National Bank, which sold it to the Republic of Austria in 1948. The purchase price was paid by the collector Franz Sobek, who received a lifelong right of residence in return and oversaw the renovation. After the Republic bought out his rights in 1965, the Schlössel was attached to the MAK as a branch.

With the building came Sobek's collection of around 160 Old Viennese clocks from about 1760 to the second half of the 19th century, as well as furniture from 1800 to 1840, complemented by Empire and Biedermeier furniture from the MAK. At the end of the 1980s the facade and interior painting were restored, and the textile furnishings in particular were faithfully renewed.

In the park stand Hubert Schmalix's sculpture "Der Vater weist dem Kind den Weg" (The Father Shows the Child the Way) since 1997 and James Turrell's Skyspace "The other Horizon" since 2004. In 2021 a documentation room on the eventful history of the house was added.
