Om museet
Maur Castle was built around 1250 as a masonry residential tower. It served as the administrative seat of the Fraumünster Abbey of Zurich and as the residence of the knightly Meier von Maur family. Between 1652 and 1775 it was the seat of the Maur court lordship within the bailiwick of Greifensee; from 1749 the last court lord lived here, the copperplate engraver and book publisher David Herrliberger (1697–1777).
Around 1800 the castle was enlarged and converted into a stately residence, and around 1850 a stairwell extension was added. Since 1962 it has belonged to the municipality of Maur, and in 1974/75 it was completely renovated.
Since 1976 the house, as the main seat of the Museen Maur, has shown the Herrliberger collection. It goes back to the core holdings of the collector Werner Suter, which the municipality acquired in 1972 and then expanded through purchases and donations. In 2004 the Salomon Cabinet and a Kunstkammer for changing exhibitions were added; the permanent display was refurnished in 2006. In the castle cellar there is a copperplate engraver's workshop (since 1991) and a letterpress printing workshop (since 2004), where visitors can try out the processes for themselves.
The Museen Maur, which also include the Ortsmuseum Mühle and the Archiv Ortsgeschichte, are run on behalf of the municipality by the Verein Museen Maur, founded in 1992.
