Om museet
The collection of the Museo de Cuenca originates in the Roman objects gathered by Francisco Suay, mayor and schoolmaster of Valeria. In 1963 the Museo Arqueológico Provincial was created in the former Pósito del Almudí, which in 1973 was integrated into the Patronato Nacional de Museos. In 1974 it opened in its current site, on the Calle Obispo Valero, and in 1984 its management passed to the Junta de Comunidades de Castilla-La Mancha.
The museum occupies the so-called Casa del Curato, a 14th-century building that keeps Gothic remains and a 15th-century coffered wooden ceiling with the arms of the Luna and Albornoz families. In the 16th century it housed part of the Inquisition tribunal of Cuenca. The façade was renovated in 1981-1982 to a design by the painter Miguel Zapata.
The collections are organised into three sections: Archaeology, Fine Arts and Oenology. The permanent exhibition, spread over three floors, traces the history of the province from the Palaeolithic to the 20th century, with rooms devoted to Prehistory and Protohistory. Since 2014 new pieces have been added and the content has been updated. The building also has a restoration workshop, a photographic laboratory, an auxiliary library and a small room for temporary exhibitions.
