Om museet
The Great Laxey Wheel was designed by the engineer Robert Casement and completed in 1854 to pump water out of the Glen Mooar part of the Great Laxey Mines. About 22 metres (72 feet 6 inches) in diameter, it is the largest surviving working waterwheel of its kind and has been one of the island's most visited attractions for well over a century.
The wheel sat at the heart of a large mining complex that employed many local people. Today the site is looked after by Manx National Heritage, which presents the stories of the Laxey miners and keeps the surviving mine buildings, including the Compressor House, open to visitors.
Visitors can climb a spiral staircase of 95 steps to a viewing platform above the wheel with views across the Glen Mooar valley, follow the mines trail through the glen and go into a section of the old mine. Laxey is also the meeting point of the Manx Electric Railway and the Snaefell Mountain Railway.
