Om museet
The Jurby Transport Museum is housed in a Bellman hangar at the former RAF station at Jurby, in the north-west of the Isle of Man. It is one of four transportable steel hangars built at Jurby in the winter of 1939 to 1940, to a design by the Royal Air Force engineer N S Bellman, and it was first used for single-engine aircraft maintenance. Later it was used by a coal merchant, then refurbished and shortened by the Isle of Man Government, which used it as a base during the building of a new road through the industrial estate.
The Manx Transport Trust leased the hangar in 2009, and the museum opened at Easter 2010. It is run entirely by volunteers and is a registered charity. The collection focuses on how transport used to work on the island, especially public transport, with buses, cars and other vehicles and related memorabilia.
Visitors, including children, are encouraged to climb aboard the open buses to experience the sights and smells of earlier years. The volunteers also restore vehicles, with projects such as a Fordson van, a Ferguson tractor, a Francis-Barnett motorcycle and a repaint of a Regent V bus. The museum welcomes school groups and is a Children’s University learning partner.
