Om museet
Milntown, near Ramsey in the parish of Lezayre, was for several centuries the home of the Christian family, who produced a number of the island’s Deemsters, or judges. William Christian, known as Illiam Dhone, was born here in 1608 and was executed as a traitor in 1663. The present house dates in its core from the 18th century and was greatly enlarged from 1828 by Deemster John Christian, who added the Gothic features and a new entrance drive.
After the family’s debts came to light in 1886 the estate was sold, and the house later served as a school and then as a hotel before becoming a private home again. Lady Kathleen Edwards bought it in 1963. Her son, Sir Clive Edwards, furnished the rooms and collected old motorcycles and cars; when he died in 1999 he left the estate to a charitable trust for the benefit of the Manx people.
Today visitors can tour the house at their own pace, walk in 15 acres of gardens and woodland and see the vehicle collection beside the working water wheel of the old corn mill, which includes early ABC and Douglas motorcycles and a car dating from 1900. A café serves refreshments, and the house and grounds are also used for events and weddings.
