Om museet
The Jewish Museum in Prague is one of the oldest Jewish museums in Europe and was founded in 1906. Its origins are linked to the historian and Hebraist Salomon Hugo Lieben and the municipal councillor August Stein. The collection was based on objects from synagogues and prayer houses that were lost during the clearance of the Prague Jewish Ghetto.
After the Nazi occupation the museum society was dissolved in autumn 1939, and the collection was taken over by the Prague Jewish community. In 1942, on its initiative, the Central Jewish Museum was established, which served as a cover name and a safe storage place for liturgical objects, books and archival materials. After the war the museum was placed under national administration, and in 1950 it was nationalised together with its collections. Independent professional work became possible again only in 1994, when the museum buildings were returned to the Prague Jewish community and the museum was established from 1 October as a non-state institution.
The museum today consists not of one building but of several monuments in Josefov, the former Jewish Town of Prague: the Maisel, Pinkas, Klausen and Spanish Synagogues, the Ceremonial Hall and the Old Jewish Cemetery with more than 12,000 tombstones from the years 1439 to 1787. One ticket covers all these sites; the Old-New Synagogue is administered by the Jewish Community in Prague and has its own admission fee.
