Om museet
The museum is housed in the Ondřej Šlik adit, which the Šlik family, then owners of the estate and the mines, had dug by hand at the end of the 16th century on the southern slope of the hill on which the historic core of Planá stands. The adit was meant to test for silver ores, which were then successfully mined on the slopes of Bohušov Hill. The Šliks also had their own mint in Planá. The total length of the mine workings is just under 200 metres, and in many places the handiwork of the miners of that time is still clearly visible.
Silver, lead, copper and antimony mines have been known in the area around Planá since pre-Hussite times. In the mid-20th century, in the 1950s, the area again became one of the centres of mining: geological exploration gave way to the mining of uranium ores near Zadní Chodov, Oldřichov and the former Slatina, which ended with the close of the 20th century.
Today the entire labyrinth of passages is open to the public and houses an exhibition of ore mining, a branch of industry that has practically disappeared in Bohemia. The exhibits are arranged thematically or set in scenes directly in the mine: coins and coin-minting technology, a mine rescuer and rescue equipment, miners’ helmets, mining lamps, minerals and moldavites, track machinery, and a chamber with tools and explosives. The museum is run by a local association; the objects belong to the town of Planá.
