Om museet
The museum is housed in a former Franciscan monastery. On the site of a hospice that was burned by Hussite troops in January 1421, Franciscans settled in 1466. The new monastery was built in 1686–1689 to plans by the architect Martin Allio, the church of St Mary Magdalene and St Elizabeth in 1689–1694, and the Baroque complex was completed in 1695 with the east wing. The monastery was abolished by force in 1950 and was not restored after 1989. During the bombing of the town on 14 February 1945, the monastery and the church burned down and for two years remained without roofs.
A regional local history museum was established here in 1954 and in 1959 was raised to the status of an institution. Since 2003 its founder has been the Plzeň Region, which later bought the monastery buildings (excluding the church) from the church.
Today’s exhibitions include the former monastery refectory with its original wall and ceiling paintings, the history of the district up to 1945 (with Czech and German texts), an exhibition on the Tachov area in the second half of the 20th century with touch screens and projections, the folk culture of the Český les with a burgher interior, a blacksmith’s workshop and playing mechanisms, the nature of the Český les, and the interactive Živé muzeum for children.
