Om museet
Kralice nad Oslavou is linked to the secret printing house of the Unity of the Brethren (Jednota bratrská), which was moved here from Ivančice in 1578. It stood next to the Kralice fortress (tvrz), which belonged to the Žerotín family, an important Protestant noble family. Before the early 17th century more than seventy prints came out of it, religious and secular writings and textbooks.
The best-known work is the six-volume Kralice Bible, published in 1579–1594. It is one of the peaks of Czech book printing and contributed significantly to the development of the Czech language. The fortress ceased to exist after 1628, and the remains of the printing house were uncovered by archaeological research led by Vlasta Fialová in 1956–1971.
Construction of today's memorial began in 1967 to a design by the architect Bohuslav Fuchs, and the building was solemnly opened on 28 September 1969. The memorial now belongs to the Moravian Museum (Moravské zemské muzeum). The long-term exhibition shows original examples of book printing from the turn of the 15th and 16th centuries, books from Prague printing houses and individual volumes of the Kralice Bible.
