Om museet
The castle at Náměšť nad Oslavou was probably built around 1220, and the first written mention dates from 1234; a cylindrical defensive tower and part of the walls survive. After the lords of Lomnice and other owners, the estate passed by marriage to the Žerotín family. From 1583 it was administered by Jan Diviš of Žerotín, who rebuilt the castle as a Renaissance château and turned it into a cultural centre.
In 1628 the estate was bought by Albrecht of Valdštejn; it was then held by Jan Křtitel Verdo of Verdenberk. In 1752 it was acquired by Count Bedřich Vilém Haugwitz, and the Haugwitz family held it until the end of the Second World War. Their rule was the most important for the estate, both economically and culturally; Jindřich Vilém and Karel Vilém Haugwitz of Náměšť made the château an important centre of musical culture.
After the war the last owner, Count Jindřich, had to leave under the Beneš Decrees, and the château became the summer residence of President Edvard Beneš, who stayed there briefly in 1946 and 1947. Two years later the château was partly opened to the public. In 2001 it was declared a national cultural monument, and since 1 January 2003 it has been managed by the National Heritage Institute. The château also housed a unique collection of tapestries.
