Metaxy : Zwischen Zerstörung und Wiederaufbau

Exhibition on Hanseatenweg about the open moment between destruction and reconstruction, with positions from war and crisis regions and an architecture that traces the prewar buildings on the site.

Om museet

The Akademie traces its origins to the Akademie der Mahl-, Bild- und Baukunst (Academy of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture), founded in 1696 by Elector Frederick III, making it one of the oldest cultural institutions in Europe. Initially primarily a school for artists and craftsmen, it was reformed in the late 18th century; the sculptor Johann Gottfried Schadow shaped it for decades as its director. In 1907, it moved into the converted Palais Arnim on Pariser Platz.

Under its president Max Liebermann, the Akademie became a forum of modernism in the 1920s. After 1933, the Nazis forced out numerous members such as Käthe Kollwitz and Heinrich Mann; in 1937, the Akademie had to vacate its building, which was destroyed in 1945. In divided Berlin, two successor institutions emerged: the Deutsche Akademie der Künste in the East in 1950 and the Akademie der Künste in the West in 1956, which a few years later received a building on Hanseatenweg in Tiergarten designed by Werner Düttmann.

After reunification, the two academies were merged on October 1, 1993; in the first half of the 2000s, responsibility for the institution passed to the federal government. In 2005, a new building with a glass facade by Günter Behnisch and Werner Durth opened on the historic site on Pariser Platz.

The members from six art sections shape a program of exhibitions, concerts, readings and debates. The Akademie also includes the extensive Archiv der Künste (Archive of the Arts) and the house museums of Bertolt Brecht and Helene Weigel in Mitte and of Anna Seghers in Adlershof.
