Om museet

Journalist Franz-Michael Günther developed the idea for a spy museum starting in 2004, initially for the Villa Schöningen at the Glienicke Bridge, where agents were exchanged several times during the Cold War. That plan fell through, but Günther spent years building a collection and examined various locations in central Berlin until, in 2014, he chose Leipziger Platz – a site where the Wall once ran.

The privately funded Spy Museum Berlin opened in a converted office building on September 19, 2015. After financial difficulties and the insolvency of the first operating company, a new team led by Robert Rückel, founder of the DDR Museum, took over in July 2016 and reopened it as the Deutsches Spionagemuseum (German Spy Museum), with lower prices and a stronger educational focus.

Between 2018 and 2019, the permanent exhibition was fundamentally revised and supplemented with numerous interactive stations. Covering around 3,000 square meters, it ranges from secret writing in antiquity through the world wars and the Cold War, with Berlin as the “capital of spies,” to big data and cyber espionage. In 2020, the museum was nominated for the European Museum of the Year Award; in 2023 it welcomed around 441,000 visitors.
