Archäologisches Freilichtmuseum Groß Raden
Open-air museum on Lake Sternberg with a reconstructed Slavic temple site, settlement and hillfort, plus a treasury full of finds from the Slavic period.
Om museet
Northeast of the village of Groß Raden, on a peninsula in the Sternberger See, lies the site of a Slavic settlement with a sanctuary and hillfort. Between 1973 and 1980, archaeologist Ewald Schuldt excavated about half of the former settlement area and fortifications. Because many finds lay within the groundwater level, numerous wooden remains had survived, allowing a very precise reconstruction of houses, paths and the cult building.
The excavations show two settlement phases: around 900 the site burned down, probably not as a result of warfare, but it was soon rebuilt in a different form. On the edge of the settlement stood a wooden cult precinct measuring about 7 by 11 meters; after its end, a new sanctuary was built on the island just offshore, surrounded by a rampart at least eight meters high.
Schuldt, then director of the Schwerin Museum für Ur- und Frühgeschichte (Museum of Prehistory and Early History), began planning an open-air museum at the original site in fall 1982. From 1983, craftsmen recreated the complex using old techniques and reforged Slavic tools; in 1987 the hillfort rampart was rebuilt and the museum opened in Schuldt’s presence.
Today the museum belongs to the Landesamt für Kultur und Denkmalpflege Mecklenburg-Vorpommern (state office for culture and heritage). The exhibition building houses the treasury with important finds from the Slavic period, the “Slawenburg” exhibition since 2022, and changing special exhibitions; on the open-air site, reenactors in historical dress regularly set up medieval camps.
