Schloss Güstrow
One of the most important Renaissance palaces in Northern Europe – the palace museum is closed for construction until probably 2028; the palace garden is open.
Om museet
After the medieval castle of the princes of Güstrow burned down in 1557, Duke Ulrich of Mecklenburg had a new residence built starting in 1558. Master builder Franz Parr created the west and south wings in a distinctive architectural language combining Italian, French and Northern European elements. After another fire, the Dutchman Philipp Brandin added the north and east wings by 1598; around 1670, under Duke Gustav Adolf, the palace bridge and early Baroque gatehouse were added.
From 1628 the military commander Albrecht von Wallenstein briefly resided here; his remodeling plans ended with his fall from power in 1630. When the Güstrow ducal line died out in 1695, the palace lost its purpose and fell into decay. From 1817 to 1945 it served as a rural workhouse and afterwards as a home for the elderly; much of the furnishings were lost during this period.
From 1963 the palace was extensively restored, and since 1972 it has been used as a museum, including for medieval North German art, hunting and ceremonial weapons, and contemporary art. Today it is managed by the Staatliche Schlösser, Gärten und Kunstsammlungen Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. For several years, extensive renovation work has been under way on the roof, facades and grounds; at the same time, a new exhibition concept is being developed featuring art from the Renaissance to the present on the first and second floors of the south and west wings.
