The show in the museum bowl reveals how Italian coachbuilding studios such as Bertone, Pininfarina and Italdesign shaped BMW's design language – with one-offs such as the BMW Garmisch and the Nazca M12; according to the museum, on view until the end of 2026.
In the rotunda, the museum stages the "Shark Nose" in front of a 1970s film set and recalls the 6 Series' appearances in film and television; the anniversary show runs until the end of January 2027.
Om museet
The BMW Museum opened in 1973, shortly after the Summer Olympics, as one of the first brand museums of a car manufacturer. The round, gleaming silver building next to the company headquarters in the "Four-Cylinder" tower was designed by Viennese architect Karl Schwanzer, who also planned the high-rise. Because of its shape, locals call the building the "Schüssel" (bowl); its flat roof bears the BMW logo, and originally a spiral path led upward along the curved outer shell.
As part of the construction of BMW Welt across the street, the museum was closed in 2004, converted and expanded. During construction, an interim exhibition could be seen in the Olympiapark. Since reopening in June 2008, the museum has had around 5,000 square meters of exhibition space – about five times as much as before. The permanent exhibition in a new multistory annex was designed by the Stuttgart studio Atelier Brückner; since then, the historic bowl has hosted changing exhibitions.
The permanent exhibition is divided into themed "houses" on the company, design, technology, motorsport, motorcycles, the brand and model series. The "Ort der Erinnerung" (Place of Remembrance) addresses the use of forced laborers at BMW during the Nazi era, and at least one vehicle from the Art Car collection is always on display. The museum is one of Munich's most visited cultural institutions and set a record in 2025 with more than 847,000 visitors.
