The Computerspielemuseum (Computer Games Museum) was founded in Berlin in 1997 and is considered the world's first permanent exhibition devoted entirely to digital, interactive entertainment culture. In the years that followed, the team organized numerous traveling and special exhibitions in Germany and abroad, including "pong.mythos," a project funded by the Kulturstiftung des Bundes (German Federal Cultural Foundation) that explored artworks inspired by the classic game Pong.
On January 21, 2011, the current permanent exhibition "Computerspiele. Evolution eines Mediums" opened in the former Café Warschau on Karl-Marx-Allee. Designed by Kurt Leucht, the café had opened in 1953, was one of East Berlin's best-known restaurants, and stood empty for more than a decade after reunification. Since the museum moved in, more than one million people have visited.
The museum is run by the non-profit Gameshouse gGmbH; the collection belongs to the Förderverein für Jugend und Sozialarbeit (fjs e. V.). It comprises more than 35,000 data carriers with games and software, over 350 consoles and computer systems, more than 12,000 magazines, as well as arcade machines and media art. The museum takes part in research projects on the long-term preservation of digital culture and received the Jury's Special Prize at the Deutscher Computerspielpreis (German Computer Game Award) in 2017.
