The Hanf Museum (Hemp Museum) opened on December 6, 1994, in the Nikolaiviertel in Berlin-Mitte. It is run by the nonprofit association H.A.N.F. e.V., which aims to share knowledge about the cannabis plant in all its facets. By its own account, it is the only museum in Germany with a permanent exhibition devoted entirely to hemp.
Covering around 250 square meters, the exhibition shows how hemp grows and how it is cultivated, harvested, and processed, ranging from historical ropes, sailcloth, and spinning wheels to paper, textiles, and remedies to present-day products such as building materials, bioplastics, food, and cosmetics. Other topics include the plant's significance in different cultures, its use as an intoxicant, and the history of cannabis prohibition in the 20th century.
In addition to the permanent exhibition, the museum uses its basement for art exhibitions, film screenings, and discussions, and regularly takes part in the Long Night of Museums (Lange Nacht der Museen). The association has also launched hands-on projects, such as a hemp maze in a field in Berlin (2009) and, together with Museumsdorf Düppel, a demonstration field for medieval hemp cultivation (2018). Since the 2026 Long Night of Museums, an exhibition on the subject of drugs has expanded the museum's offerings.
