Baroque painting from Augsburg and southern Germany in the Schaezlerpalais – with a magnificent Rococo ballroom, the Haberstock Foundation and a reverse glass painting cabinet.
The photographer Daniel Biskup shows, for the first time, portraits of artists from more than 35 years, including Ai Weiwei, Gilbert & George and Georg Baselitz – in their studios as well as in unusual places.
The painter Jiří Georg Dokoupil transforms the Rococo ballroom with glass bubbles and soap bubble paintings into an expansive installation that plays with daylight and the Baroque decor.
Paintings, prints and coins from an Augsburg private collector's Venice collection, in the café and the Liebert Room.
Om museet
The banker Benedikt Adam Liebert had the Schaezlerpalais on Augsburg's Maximilianstraße built from 1765 to plans by the Munich court architect Karl Albert von Lespilliez. The two-story ballroom with its ceiling fresco, stucco and carvings was inaugurated in April 1770 with a ball attended by the young Marie Antoinette on her bridal journey to France. Through marriage the house passed to the Schaezler family, who owned it for four generations and gave it its present name.
The palace survived World War II largely unscathed. From 1951 the city was already using rooms for its art collections; in 1958 Wolfgang Freiherr von Schaezler handed the building over to the city of Augsburg on condition that it be used exclusively for cultural purposes. The Deutsche Barockgalerie was then set up there, combining municipal holdings with loans.
After extensive renovation, the gallery reopened in 2006 with a new presentation. Around a hundred paintings on the second floor lead through an enfilade of rooms more than a hundred meters long to the ballroom. The focus is on Augsburg painting of the 17th and 18th centuries – the city was a leading art center at the time – complemented by works by other German artists such as Angelika Kauffmann, Anton Graff and Johann Heinrich Füssli.
The third floor houses the paintings of the Karl und Magdalene Haberstock-Stiftung, which has been part of the collection since 1983 and whose provenance the museum is researching; changing special exhibitions are also held here. The first floor shows reverse glass paintings, and behind the building lies a Rococo garden laid out according to historical evidence.
