Om museet
The Maximilianmuseum is considered the oldest municipal museum in Bavaria. In 1853 the city of Augsburg acquired the building complex between Annastraße and Fuggerplatz, which had previously served as a Protestant orphanage for poor children, and opened its first municipal museum there in 1855. It is named after its patron, King Maximilian II of Bavaria.
The museum occupies two Renaissance merchants' houses: the Welserhaus, where Bartholomäus Welser lived, and the house on Fuggerplatz built in 1544–1546 with its stately facade, which later belonged to the Hainhofer family, among others. Around 1700, the engraver Elias Christoph Heiß had ceremonial rooms such as the Felicitas Hall and the Aeneas Gallery decorated with ceiling frescoes by Melchior Steidl.
In 1924 the city purchased the collection of Munich court councilor Sigmund Röhrer; its merger with the museum's holdings gave rise to the Städtische Kunstsammlungen (municipal art collections) in 1932. After extensive renovation and a new concept, the museum reopened in 2006 and received the Bavarian Museum Prize in 2007. Since then, the glass-roofed Viermetzhof courtyard has housed the original bronzes of Augsburg's monumental fountains.
The focus is on Augsburg goldsmiths' work, sculpture, scientific instruments, decorative arts, coins and medals, and city history. The model chamber with historic architectural, machine and hydraulic engineering models is classified as cultural property of national importance. A lapidarium in the basement and a virtual reality journey back to Augsburg around 1514 round out the offerings.
