Om museet
After World War II, Berlin had no technology museum for almost four decades, even though the city had previously been home to numerous technical collections, such as the Transport and Construction Museum in the Hamburger Bahnhof or the Museum of Oceanography. A friends' association campaigned for a new museum from 1960 onward. In December 1983 the Museum für Verkehr und Technik (Museum of Transport and Technology) finally opened, initially with 1,700 square meters of exhibition space in the old building of a former cold-storage company on Trebbiner Straße.
In the following years the museum expanded onto the grounds of the former Anhalter freight station and its railway depot: the listed locomotive sheds house the railway exhibition, and the Science Center Spectrum opened in 1990. In 1996 the museum was renamed Deutsches Technikmuseum Berlin. Since 1999 a “Raisin Bomber” has hung on the façade of the new building, which opened in 2001 and received the shipping exhibition in 2003 and the aviation exhibition in 2005.
In 2001 the Stiftung Deutsches Technikmuseum Berlin (foundation) was established. Since 2011, further permanent exhibitions have been created in the freight sheds along the Ladestraße, for example on road traffic and network technology; in 2015 the Sugar Museum also found a new home here.
Today, on an extensive site with a museum park, windmills, a smithy and a historic brewery, the museum presents the cultural and everyday history of technology – from transport and communication to production and energy. Together with Spectrum, it records around 700,000 visits a year.
