The overview exhibition of a cross-border project with around 30 exhibitions in three countries explores migration stories in the tri-border region from the past to the present, supplemented by objects from a public collection appeal.
This small Hebelsaal exhibition shows winter scenes from the museum's art collection, with free admission.
Om museet
The collection goes back to the Lörracher Altertumsverein (antiquities society), founded in 1882 by culturally interested citizens. The occasion was a folklore exhibition marking the 200th anniversary of the town's charter, for which everyday objects, archival documents and works of art were gathered. In 1927 the society, by then a local chapter of the “Badische Heimat”, donated the collection to the town of Lörrach on condition that it be cared for and expanded.
In 1932 the town opened a local history museum in the former margravial court cooperage on the Burghof. After World War II it did not reopen until 1953 – now focusing on religious art, painting and folklore. After the Baroque building was demolished in 1975, the museum moved in 1978 into its current home on Basler Straße: a late Baroque building from 1755 that was built as a tobacco factory and served as a school for around 200 years, most recently as the Hebelgymnasium. The facade was preserved and the interior completely redesigned; a further conversion followed in 2002.
Today the museum sees itself as the museum of the tri-border region. The bilingual permanent exhibition displays about 2,000 objects from southern Baden, Upper Alsace and northwestern Switzerland on around 1,000 square meters. In addition there are major special exhibitions, often organized in cross-border networks with museums from all three countries, as well as smaller presentations in the Hebelsaal. The art collection is one of the most important museum collections in southern Baden.
