Regionalmuseum Römervilla
Protective structure over the walls of a Roman villa urbana in Grenzach with finds on everyday life on the Upper Rhine – free admission.
Om museet
The first indications of a Roman building in the center of Grenzach came to light in 1893 during work on the water pipeline, including parts of a large column. Only after several houses were demolished could the southwest corner of the main building of a villa urbana, together with a water basin, be excavated in 1983; the walls in places still stood more than two meters high. Further excavations in the surrounding area revealed at least four outbuildings, so the estate is thought to have covered about 8,500 square meters. The wealthy villa was closely connected with the Roman city of Augusta Raurica on the other side of the Rhine; the place name Grenzach is traced back to the Roman name Carantius.
On the initiative of the Verein für Heimatgeschichte Grenzach-Wyhlen (local history association), in particular the local historian Dr. Erhard Richter, a protective structure was built over the exposed walls and was dedicated as a museum in 1986. The building belongs to the municipality; the museum is run on a volunteer basis by the association.
In 2011 the exhibition was redesigned with support from the Archäologisches Landesmuseum (state archaeological museum) and supplemented with finds from the region. Organized by theme, it tells of everyday life in the villa: tools, cosmetic and sewing implements, kitchen and table, as well as purple dye murex snails, oyster shells, marble cladding, stucco remains, and fragments of wall paintings. Coins from the 1st to the 4th century show how long the area remained Roman in character. In 2026 the museum celebrated its 40th anniversary.
