Om museet

The Literary Museum goes back to the municipality's Chekhov archive, which has been built up since the 1950s and today comprises tens of thousands of documents on Anton Chekhov and other authors connected with Badenweiler. Chekhov died in the town in 1904 during a spa stay; since then Badenweiler has cultivated a lively culture of remembrance and close contacts with Chekhov sites in Russia.

Conceived under the direction of Heinz Setzer, the "Tschechow-Salon" opened in July 1998 in the Kurhaus, supported by the state of Baden-Württemberg and the Kulturstiftung der Deutschen Bank. In July 2015 the museum moved, with an expanded concept, into the basement of the town hall on Anton-Tschechow-Platz in the historic town center.

On about 120 square meters, the exhibition is divided into four sections: Chekhov himself, the theater reformer Konstantin Stanislavski, who stayed in Badenweiler for a long time, the spa town's relations with Russia, and writers such as Stephen Crane, Hermann Hesse and René Schickele. Photos, exhibits and film and audio documents illuminate the relationship between literature and spa culture. The museum regards itself as the only literature museum in Western Europe that bears Chekhov's name.
