The museum's first special exhibition, featuring selected images from the photo archive of the Sportmuseum Berlin – from regattas in the imperial era to Nazi propaganda images and private photos.
Om museet
It all began with a school collection: from 1980, Grünau teacher Werner Philipp and his students gathered boats, photos and documents on water sports on the Dahme. In 1990, with support from the Köpenick cultural office and the Stiftung Stadtmuseum Berlin, this became a public museum, initially housed in the Grünau community center. A friends' association was formed in 1991, and in 1994 the collection was donated to the State of Berlin.
Around ten years after its founding, the museum moved to the grounds of the regatta course, where it presented more than 200 objects in two rooms. Because of the renovation of the listed regatta grandstand, it was closed from October 2016 to September 2024.
On September 6, 2024, the museum reopened in the historic grandstand buildings. Today it is part of the Sportmuseum Berlin, which falls under the Senate Department for the Interior and Sport. The newly conceived permanent exhibition “Wasser Sport Grünau” tells of boathouses and clubs, the first Berlin sailing regatta in 1868, the development of boatbuilding and the political ruptures that shaped sport on the regatta course – such as the Olympic rowing and canoeing events of 1936. Changing special exhibitions, often featuring material from the Sportmuseum's photo archive, as well as free tours and workshops round out the offering.
