Om museet

The building was constructed in the late 1930s as the officers' mess of a Wehrmacht engineering school. During the night of May 8 to 9, 1945, the commanders-in-chief of the Wehrmacht signed the unconditional surrender here before representatives of the Soviet Union, the USA, Great Britain and France, ending World War II in Europe. Until 1949, the head of the Soviet Military Administration resided in the building.

In 1967, the Soviet armed forces set up a surrender museum here, which served the political education of soldiers and the GDR population until the troops withdrew. The heavy weapons and tanks in the museum garden date from this period, among other things.

After the collapse of the Soviet Union, Germany and Russia agreed to preserve the site. In 1994, today's museum was re-established as a German-Russian association and opened in May 1995, 50 years after the end of the war. In 1997/98, museums from Ukraine and Belarus joined the sponsoring association. The current permanent exhibition, "Deutschland und die Sowjetunion im Zweiten Weltkrieg" (Germany and the Soviet Union in World War II), opened in 2013.

Since Russia's attack on Ukraine in 2022, the museum has dropped its former epithet "Deutsch-Russisches Museum" (German-Russian Museum) and flies only the Ukrainian flag. Fully funded by the federal government, the museum commemorates all Soviet victims of the war of annihilation and also covers the postwar period and the Cold War.
