Exhibition venue for contemporary art by the Englischer Garten – no collection of its own, with temporary exhibitions, performances and a Nazi-era history.
Major show by the Argentine artist with aerial sculptures, spider habitats and a work on lithium mining developed with Indigenous communities from northern Argentina. It includes the freely accessible Museo Aero Solar in the Middle Hall (until October 26, 2026).
Site-specific commissioned project with drawing installations and small aluminum sculptures that engage with the material and history of the building. Free admission.
Finds that a river surfer has recovered from the bed of the nearby Eisbach since 2008 – from wedding rings to World War relics. In the Archiv Galerie, free admission.
New body of work by the American artist centered on a new film, complemented by photography, sculpture and a kinetic installation on images of war and violence.
Om museet
The building on Prinzregentenstraße was constructed between 1933 and 1937 to plans by Paul Ludwig Troost as the “Haus der Deutschen Kunst” (House of German Art). It was one of the Nazi regime's first prestige buildings; until 1944 it hosted the “Great German Art Exhibitions”, with which those in power propagated their ideal of art and excluded modernism.
After the end of the war, the US Army initially used the building as an officers' club. Exhibitions returned from 1946, and the building deliberately became a showcase for the previously ostracized modernism – for example with the major Picasso exhibition of 1955, which also included “Guernica”. This rededication was long seen as an act of reparation, but it also reflected postwar society's wish to keep the Nazi past at a distance.
Since 1992 the building has been run by the non-profit Stiftung Haus der Kunst München (foundation), supported by the Free State of Bavaria and private partners. Under directors such as Chris Dercon, Okwui Enwezor and, since 2020, Andrea Lissoni, it developed into an internationally connected center for contemporary art with more than 300 exhibitions and performance and sound programs such as TUNE.
The Haus der Kunst has no collection of its own. Critical engagement with its architecture and history is an integral part of the program: the freely accessible Archiv Galerie documents the building's history, and artists regularly respond to the building with site-specific works. A general renovation based on plans by David Chipperfield is in preparation.
