Site-specific installation of rice paper, ink and pigments in the prayer hall that engages with the eventful history of the synagogue building; accompanied by an open studio.
The Jüdisches Museum Rendsburg occupies the ensemble of the former Jewish community in the Neuwerk district: the Talmud Torah school built in the 1830s and the synagogue erected next to it in 1844/45, with women's gallery and mikveh. During the November pogrom of 1938, the interior was ransacked and the Torah ark destroyed by an explosion; afterward, the building served as a fish smokehouse for decades.
At the end of the 1970s, the former synagogue returned to public awareness. After it was listed as a protected monument in 1981 and restored, the Dr.-Bamberger-Haus cultural center moved in in 1985, named after a Rendsburg physician persecuted during the Nazi era. In 1988 the Jewish museum opened alongside it, one of the oldest Jewish museums in Germany. Since 2002 it has been part of the Landesmuseen Schleswig-Holstein (Stiftung Schloss Gottorf).
The permanent exhibition tells of some 400 years of Jewish presence in the region: from everyday and community life through persecution and expulsion in the Nazi era to the immigration of Jewish people from the former Soviet Union since the 1990s. It also addresses present-day antisemitism. The museum's profile includes works by artists persecuted as Jews, as well as temporary exhibitions, often installations in the former prayer hall.
