Særudstilling

The museum's roots go back to a history society founded in 1910, which held a first exhibition in 1912. Since 1977 the museum has been housed in the former elementary school on Kirchplatz; today it occupies four interconnected buildings, linked by bridges and known as the "Museumsinsel" (Museum Island).
A dedicated department is devoted to Konrad Zuse, who lived in Hünfeld from 1957 until his death in 1995 and became an honorary citizen of the town in 1975. In 2006 the Zuse exhibition was expanded to around 200 square meters, and in 2007 the museum received its current name and a foundation set up by the town of Hünfeld and the district of Fulda as its operator. On display is one of the largest collections of Zuse devices in the world – from the working replica of the Z3 and the Z22 and Z23 vacuum-tube computers to the Z64 large-format plotter – as well as Zuse's paintings.
The other departments cover prehistory and early history, including the Bronze Age "Mädchen von Molzbach" (Girl of Molzbach), the town's development from monastery to farming town, the Great Fire of 1888, the Battle of Hünfeld in 1866, Jewish life in the former district, sacred art, and the region's nature and hunting. The museum also includes the railway museum in the old water tower (since 2013) and a reconstructed Celtic farmstead in Mackenzell.
