Kreismuseum Grimma
Regional museum in a former girls' school next to the monastery church: city history, crafts, printing and the Landesschule Grimma.
Om museet
The building on Paul-Gerhardt-Straße stands on the grounds of the former Augustinian churchyard, right next to the former monastery church. After the Reformation, Magdalena von Staupitz, one of the nuns who fled the Nimbschen convent in 1523, founded the town's first girls' school here in 1529. The present building was constructed in 1817 and received its current form in 1841; in 1885 the school moved to a new building. The house with its gateway and spolia in the garden is a listed monument.
The impetus for the museum came from an antiquities exhibition that Grimma citizens showed in the summer of 1900 in the riding hall of the hussar regiment. The history and antiquities society that emerged from it received rooms in the former girls' school from the town in 1901 for a permanent exhibition. Through donations and excavations by the society's members, the collection grew rapidly; in 1904 the society built a half-timbered house replica on the second floor, into which parts of a plank-walled parlor and a black kitchen from the old town were later inserted.
Today the holdings comprise around 27,000 objects from the region as well as a specialist library of about 10,000 volumes. The permanent exhibition covers urban development since the first mention in 1200, home culture, crafts, industrialization, printing and publishing around Georg Joachim Göschen, and the Fürsten- und Landesschule St. Augustin (a historic boarding school). The operator is the Leipzig district.
