Group exhibition with works by international contemporary artists on border regimes, displacement and political fault lines since World War II – a plea for taking a stand, solidarity and empathy.
Om museet
The Kunstgebäude on Stuttgart's Schlossplatz was built between 1910 and 1913 to designs by the architect Theodor Fischer and opened as an exhibition building in May 1913. Its site had previously been occupied by the Neues Lusthaus, a late-16th-century pleasure palace of the dukes of Württemberg, which burned down in 1902. Its domed building topped by a gilded stag remains a landmark to this day; relief medallions on the facade show motifs from works by Swabian poets.
During World War II, the building was destroyed except for the domed section. It was rebuilt from 1956 to 1961 under Paul Bonatz and Günter Wilhelm, who added a new exhibition space, the large Vierecksaal (square hall). Together with the Kuppelsaal (dome hall) and the connecting wing, around 2,000 square meters of exhibition space have been available ever since. From 2013 to 2016, the state parliament of Baden-Württemberg met here while its own building was being renovated.
The main user is the Württembergischer Kunstverein, one of the oldest art associations in Germany and one of those with the most members. It has no collection of its own but presents changing exhibitions of international contemporary art with a sociopolitical focus, accompanied by lectures, discussions and projects in its open program format "Querungen". The Stuttgarter Künstlerbund (Stuttgart artists' association) is also based in the building.
