Om museet

The roots of the Landesmuseum Württemberg go back to the Kunstkammer of the Dukes of Württemberg in the 16th century, where treasures, curiosities, and natural specimens were gathered. The actual founding year is considered to be 1862, when King Wilhelm I established a state collection of the country's "patriotic" art and antiquities, from which today's Landesmuseum emerged.

The museum is housed in the Altes Schloss (Old Castle) in the heart of Stuttgart, a former moated castle that was converted into a Renaissance palace with an arcaded courtyard in the 16th century. In 1931, a fire destroyed large parts of the building, and it suffered heavy bomb damage in World War II. The palace was rebuilt between 1947 and 1969 under architect Paul Schmitthenner.

The collections are among the most important cultural history holdings in southwestern Germany: archaeological finds from the Paleolithic to the early Middle Ages, including Ice Age art from the Swabian Jura and early Celtic princely graves such as the one at Hochdorf, as well as antiquities, the Kunstkammer, clocks, scientific instruments, glass, and musical instruments. The display collection "LegendäreMeisterWerke" traces the region's history up to the end of the kingdom across around 2,400 square meters.

Today the Landesmuseum also includes the Haus der Musik in the neighboring Fruchtkasten, the children's museum Junges Schloss in the Altes Schloss, the Museum der Alltagskultur (Museum of Everyday Culture) at Schloss Waldenbuch, and several branch museums across the state. Christina Haak has been academic director since 2023.
