How photos were retouched more than a hundred years ago and how AI deepfakes are made today: the exhibition explores the real and the fake and invites visitors to try image manipulation themselves.
Jewish life in the Southwest from the French Revolution to the present – told not only as a history of exclusion, but above all as a history of shaping society, belonging and new beginnings.
Om museet
The Haus der Geschichte Baden-Württemberg was founded on October 1, 1987 as a state-owned institution. Its mission: to collect, research and present the history of the German Southwest since the late 18th century – that is, the background and development of the federal state formed in 1952 from the states of Baden, Württemberg and Hohenzollern.
The museum did not get a building of its own until a good 15 years later: on December 13, 2002, the permanent exhibition opened in a new building on Konrad-Adenauer-Straße, designed by Michael Wilford and Manuel Schupp, which completes Stuttgart's Kulturmeile (culture mile) between the Staatsgalerie, the state parliament and the state theaters.
The permanent exhibition "Landesgeschichte(n)" leads chronologically from the Napoleonic reorganization of the Southwest to the present day, asking above all how people in the region were able to take part in politics and society. Themed rooms cover topics such as migration, the economy, religion and science. It includes some 1,500 original objects, numerous photographs, films and media stations. Special exhibitions are added every year.
The Haus der Geschichte also runs several branch sites, including the Hotel Silber memorial in the former Stuttgart Gestapo headquarters, the Stauffenberg memorial in the Old Castle (Altes Schloss) and the museum in the former prison on the Hohenasperg. Cornelia Hecht-Zeiler has been director since 2024.
