Om museet

The Saxon electors were already collecting drawings and prints in the 16th century, initially as part of their Kunstkammer (cabinet of art and curiosities). In 1720, Augustus the Strong made it an independent institution – which is why the Kupferstich-Kabinett is considered the oldest specialized museum for art on paper in the German-speaking world. Over time, a courtly picture collection developed into an internationally significant museum of drawings, prints and photography; as early as 1899, it became one of the first museums in the German-speaking world to set up a department of artistic photography.

The Nazi era brought severe losses: in the “Degenerate Art” campaign, the museum lost 381 works, mainly Expressionist sheets by artists such as Ernst Ludwig Kirchner. After the war, the Red Army transported most of the holdings to the Soviet Union; most sheets were returned by 1958, but around 50,000 are still considered missing as a result of the war.

Since 2004, the Kupferstich-Kabinett has been based in the rebuilt Residenzschloss, which houses its storage, study room and exhibition rooms; previously it had been located in the Semper Building at the Zwinger, among other places. The collection comprises more than half a million works from the late Middle Ages to the present, including works by Dürer, Cranach, Rembrandt, Caspar David Friedrich and Käthe Kollwitz. Because paper is sensitive to light, the works are shown in changing special exhibitions; in the study room, originals can be viewed free of charge. The museum also includes the Josef-Hegenbarth-Archiv in Dresden-Loschwitz.
