Om museet
The museum presents over 1,300 selected folk art objects across four floors. Most come from the South German language area and were made between the 17th and 19th centuries. The collection goes back to Alfred Hagenlocher.
The exhibition is arranged by material and technique: ceramics on the basement and first floors, above them textiles, religious folk art, jewelry and ironwork. Glass and woodwork are also shown. A special feature is the Zizenhausen terracottas, including twelve of 42 rare figure pairs of the Basel Dance of Death by Anton Sohn.
After the National Socialist past of the collector had been publicly debated, the town council removed his name from the museum's title in 2020; since then the house has simply been called "Museum für Volkskunst".
