Midlertidigt lukket (forventet til 2027). Closed since late November 2023 for renovation (fire protection, energy upgrades) and a redesign of the permanent exhibition; reopening is expected in summer 2027.

Om museet

The museum was created in the mid-1980s as a new kind of institution bridging the history of technology, culture, and society, and opened in 1988. It occupies the listed 1920s hall of the screw factory of the Julius Tafel iron rolling mill. Founded in 1875, the works turned scrap iron into bar iron and wrought iron for Nuremberg's metal industry; it shut down in 1975, and apart from the hall and the administration building, the site disappeared in 1990. Since 1994 the museum has been part of the Museen der Stadt Nürnberg (Nuremberg city museums).

Its centerpiece is the “Museumsstraße” (museum street): on one side are units such as a steam engine house or a print shop representing the world of work, on the other side living quarters or a movie theater representing everyday life. The focus is on the lives of people from all walks of life since industrialization. In 2000 the museum was expanded to almost 6,000 square meters. Affiliated with it are the motorcycle museum, covering Nuremberg's once-important two-wheeler industry with its own Zündapp section, and the school museum, which was newly set up in 2008 and has an original classroom from around 1900.

Since late November 2023 the museum has been closed for a comprehensive renovation: fire protection, insulation of the roof and south facade, a photovoltaic system, and repairs to a damp retaining wall are planned. At the same time, the permanent exhibition, which has only been updated piecemeal since 1988, is being reworked – with a new foyer, an introductory room, a forum for discussing current issues, and a seminar room for groups. Reopening is scheduled for summer 2027.
