Om museet

Museum Morsbroich opened on January 27, 1951, and is considered the first museum of contemporary art newly founded in West Germany after the war. The City of Leverkusen had leased the war-damaged palace from its owner for this purpose; the museum was explicitly intended to offer a stage to living artists of all movements and to give modern art, ostracized during the Nazi era, a place again.

The building itself has a long history: the knight's seat is documented from the 14th century, belonged to the Teutonic Order from 1619 and was replaced in the 18th century by a small Rococo pleasure palace. In the 19th century it passed to Cologne banking and industrial families, who extended it with side wings. After the city purchased it in 1974, it was renovated under the direction of architect Oswald Mathias Ungers and reopened in 1985.

Under directors Udo Kultermann and Rolf Wedewer, the museum made an international name for itself with pioneering exhibitions, such as the first museum show on monochrome painting (1960), a major Lucio Fontana retrospective (1962) and an early exhibition on conceptual art (1969). Later, a floor for prints and drawings in the attic and a sculpture park with site-specific works were added.

The collection comprises some 600 paintings and sculptures and around 4,000 works on paper, including works by Gerhard Richter, Yves Klein, Piero Manzoni, Lucio Fontana and artists of Art Informel. Jörg van den Berg has directed the museum since 2021; it celebrates its 75th anniversary in 2026.
