Art museum for geometric abstract art next to the Ritter Sport factory in Waldenbuch – home to the Marli Hoppe-Ritter collection centered on the square.
Eight contemporary positions show how geometric forms and methodical working are combined with everyday materials and lived reality – from painting and ceramics to installation.
Om museet
Museum Ritter was created by the collector Marli Hoppe-Ritter, co-owner of the chocolate maker Ritter Sport. Over decades she assembled a collection of geometric abstract art in which the square – also a nod to the shape of the chocolate bar – plays a central role. To show these holdings to the public, she opened her own museum in Waldenbuch in September 2005.
The new building right next to the company grounds was designed by the Berlin firm Max Dudler. Clean-lined volumes clad in light limestone and large window openings define the building; a wide passage connects two wings and opens onto the Aichtal valley. Around 700 square meters of exhibition space are available on two floors.
Today the collection comprises more than 1,200 paintings, objects, light and kinetic works, installations, and prints, including works by Josef Albers, Max Bill, Victor Vasarely, Heinz Mack, and Vera Molnar. The museum is funded by the Marli Hoppe-Ritter-Stiftung zur Förderung der Kunst (foundation for the promotion of art), without public subsidies. With three to four exhibitions a year, it alternates between collection holdings and contemporary positions in constructive and concrete art.
