Deutsches Fleischermuseum
Germany's only butcher museum, in the historic half-timbered Vogtshaus on Böblingen's market square: craft, cultural history, and art around meat.
Om museet
The Deutsches Fleischermuseum moved into the former Vogtshaus on Böblingen's market square in 1984. The half-timbered building, whose history reaches back to the 16th century, is connected to the Vogtsscheune (barn) by an inner courtyard and is one of the few buildings that survived the extensive destruction of the old town in 1943. With a wink, the museum calls it the quirkiest house in town.
On five floors, the municipal museum covers all facets of the butcher's trade: tools, machines, and shop fittings tell of slaughtering, sausage-making, and selling, along with decorative crafts from the butchery trade and questions about meat consumption and abstinence today and in the future. Since 2019 the permanent exhibition has been gradually redesigned in front of the public's eyes.
Besides the collection, the program is shaped by changing exhibitions of contemporary art, readings, lectures, and events. Since June 2026 an audio guide with memories of butchers of various generations has accompanied the tour. Since the beginning of 2025, admission to the Böblingen museums has been free.
