Wolhynier Umsiedlermuseum
Open-air museum in a resettler farmstead from 1947 about the Volhynian Germans who made a new start in Linstow after World War II.
Om museet
After World War II, numerous German refugees came to Linstow in Mecklenburg; more than half of the 73 families who received land here during the 1945 land reform came from Volhynia in what is now northwestern Ukraine. Their ancestors had settled there as farmers and craftsmen from the 1860s on, were resettled in 1939/40, and had to flee again in 1945. In Linstow, they built their houses the way they knew them from their old homeland: from wooden planks and clay, thatched with straw and reed.
One of these houses was built in 1947 by Emma Altmann with her eldest sons. Under one roof were the kitchen, living room, bedroom, a chamber for the maid, the stable, and the harvest storage. In 1987 the house was closed off and was to be demolished. After the political changes, the municipality took over the building in 1990 and, with the help of eyewitnesses, converted it into a museum; the furnishings were collected from donations by former Volhynian Germans. The museum opened on August 6, 1993, and in the same year the Heimatverein Linstow (local history association) was founded as its operator.
In the following years, a bakehouse, farm buildings, an earth cellar, a Garden of Remembrance with a gravestone from Volhynia, and in 2005 an education and museum barn were added. In 2017, the permanent exhibition on the refugees' new beginning in the postwar period was redesigned, and in 2023 the house was renovated. In addition to guided tours, the museum offers project days and seminars on flight, expulsion, and migration.
