Straßenbahnmuseum Kassel
Association-run museum in the KVG depot on Sandershäuser Straße on the history of Kassel's trams, open every first Saturday of the month.
Om museet
Kassel has one of the longest uninterrupted tram histories in Europe: in 1877, a steam tram began running between Königsplatz and Wilhelmshöhe – making Kassel the third city in Europe with this technology, after Paris and Copenhagen. Later, the "Große Casseler Straßenbahn", the forerunner of today's Kasseler Verkehrs-Gesellschaft (KVG, Kassel's transit company), took over the network. The Interessengemeinschaft Nahverkehrsbetrieb Kassel e. V. preserves this history and runs the museum.
The collection was first housed in the Holländische Straße depot, which was later demolished. On April 3, 2004, the museum opened at its new location in the KVG depot on Sandershäuser Straße in the Bettenhausen district. On display are tickets, uniforms, signs, tram components, photo albums and a model tram layout. The large original vehicles have been at the Technik-Museum Kassel since the end of 2014. For a long time, a sun-yellow vintage railcar from 1909 also shuttled between Königsplatz and the museum on opening days; such museum rides are not currently offered. On opening days, a small cafeteria serves waffles, and souvenirs are available.
