Om museet

Schloss Grafeneck near Gomadingen grew out of a medieval castle; in the 16th century it was expanded into a hunting lodge for the dukes of Württemberg, and under Duke Carl Eugen into a Baroque summer residence. It lost significance in the 19th century; in 1928 the Protestant Samariterstiftung acquired the estate and set up a home for people with disabilities there.

In October 1939 the Nazis seized the palace. From January to December 1940, Grafeneck was the first killing center of the so-called Aktion T4: in a barrack converted into a gas chamber, more than 10,600 people with intellectual disabilities or mental illnesses were murdered after being brought from psychiatric hospitals and care institutions in Württemberg, Baden, Bavaria, Hesse and North Rhine-Westphalia.

After the war, the Samariterstiftung once again used Grafeneck as a facility for people with disabilities, which it remains to this day. Remembrance developed step by step: a cemetery was created in the 1950s and 1960s, a memorial plaque was put up in 1982, and an open memorial chapel was built in 1990.

In October 2005 the documentation center opened with a permanent exhibition on victims, perpetrators, resistance and the legal reckoning after 1945. Run by the association Gedenkstätte Grafeneck e. V. in cooperation with the Samariterstiftung, Grafeneck is today a place of learning and research, offers a name search for the victims and is one of the most visited memorial sites in Baden-Württemberg.
