Om museet
The Wiesentäler Textilmuseum commemorates the textile industry that shaped the valley between Basel and Todtnau for more than 150 years. In the 19th century, manufacturers from Switzerland and Alsace settled here; the water power of the Wiese and Baden's accession to the German Zollverein (customs union) in 1834 accelerated the development, and at times more than 20,000 people made their living from spinning, weaving and bleaching.
The museum was founded in 1996 and laid the foundation of its collection. After the founding of the friends' association (Förderverein) in 2003, extensive conversions created about 1,000 square meters of exhibition space; the museum reopened on April 30, 2009.
The focus is on working mechanical looms, spinning and winding machines, cord-braiding machines and cotton quality testing devices, which show the path from thread to fabric. A studio is devoted to fabric patterns, drawings and punch cards, and photo documentation traces developments since the early 19th century. A separate area tells the story of the "irisette" brand, with which Zell marketed the first colorfully woven bed linen in Europe.
