About the museum
The Kunstmühle in Dornau was first mentioned in documents in 1635 and sits on the grounds of the well-known Mühlsteinstube restaurant, prized for its fish dishes. For decades grain was milled here, until operations ceased and the mill fell into a long Sleeping Beauty slumber.
The newly founded non-profit association "Verein zur Erhaltung der Kunstmühle Dornau – Glück zu" woke the site back to life. Its roughly twenty members restore the building on a voluntary basis, collect and prepare old milling tools, fittings and miller's equipment, and document the history of the mill, millrace and weir. On October 14, 2023, the first Austrian Mill Day, the doors opened to the public for the first time.
Inside the multi-story building are oversized machines, a wooden grain silo spanning three floors, and a network of pipes once used to mix different types of flour. The association offers tours including the museum, bakery and lectures, and uses the rooms for exhibitions, vernissages and readings.
