About the museum
The Kösslerhäusl lies halfway between Großarl and Hüttschlag and was the home of the Kössler mining family, who can be traced back to the 16th century. The age of the log house cannot be determined precisely. Living quarters, storage and stabling are united under one roof; in times without work in the Hüttschlag copper mine, the often large families had to live off their meagre farming.
During the renovation, the original condition was deliberately retained in order to show the impoverished living conditions of the former residents truthfully. The house is built entirely of wood and consists of a main building with two extensions. The Museumsverein Denkmalhof Kösslerhäusl, founded in 1970, looks after the house.
Particularly worth seeing is the old smoke kitchen with soot-blackened pitch-pine torch holders, a Kobel stove and a wooden smoke vent. On the upper floor stand farming implements such as a wooden plough, a wooden threshing machine, a windmill and carpenters' screw clamps; in the cellar, a display room shows a collection of around 2,000 knives as well as old documents, traditional costumes and musical instruments. The house sees itself less as a classic museum with many exhibits than as a preserved historic dwelling.
