About the museum
The Gasteiner Museum is run by the Verein der Freunde des Gasteiner Museums (Association of Friends of the Gasteiner Museum) and is located in the Grand Hotel de l'Europe in the centre of Bad Gastein. It is dedicated to the history of the spa and its thermal water and at the same time documents the living traditions of the Gastein Valley.
The largest part of the space is taken up by the walk through history. It ranges from Neolithic finds and Roman coins, which point to early use of the springs, through the medieval bathing culture with Emperor Frederick III as a famous spa guest, to the 19th century, when the wild spa became a fashionable world resort. Topics include the imperial meetings, the Gastein Convention of 1864, the hotelier families and winter sports with the 1958 World Ski Championships.
Further sections explain the thermal springs and the effect of radon, the mining of Tauern gold on the Radhausberg up to the healing gallery, and the Gastein Krampus and Perchten figures. One display case is dedicated to the poet Karl Heinrich Waggerl, who was born in Bad Gastein, and a painting gallery mainly shows views of the spa town by 19th-century painters, including works from the circle of Archduke Johann.
