About the museum
The Austriahütte on the Brandalm below the Dachstein south face is a mountain hut of the Alpenverein Austria, with a history dating back to 1880. In 1989 an exhibition room was set up in the hut; the museum's collection grew out of it, and at 1,638 m above sea level it is considered the highest-situated museum in Styria.
The collection includes alpine artworks, natural history objects, mountaineering equipment and mountain rescue gear. The redesigned permanent exhibition examines the relationship between people and the mountain: the opening up of the Dachstein, the role of the Alpine Club in the region, mountain pictures, huts and trails, climbing technique, mountain rescue, and life on the mountain in the past and today.
At six listening stations, residents of Ramsau who have lived and worked on the Dachstein over the last hundred years tell their stories. The museum is run by the Alpenverein Austria with a volunteer visitor service and is open daily during the summer season. It is supported by the State of Styria and the Austrian Alpine Club, among others. The approach from the valley station of the Dachstein-Südwandbahn is short and flat, so a visit combines well with a hike or a stop at the hut for refreshments.
