About the museum
The museum's roots go back to the mid-19th century, when the naturalist Friedrich Simony began researching Hallstatt in 1844. In 1884 the Musealverein Hallstatt (museum society) was founded, which has since researched the cultural and settlement history of the village and runs the museum.
After comprehensive renovation, the building on the Seestraße reopened in 2002. The focus is on the Hallstatt culture: the finds from the salt mine and from the cemetery in the Salzberg high valley were so significant that an entire epoch of the European Iron Age (roughly 800 to 450 BC) was named after the place. The prehistoric settlement was not on the lakeshore but high above today's market town.
The exhibition is divided into 26 thematic areas. It spans the Neolithic, prehistoric salt mining, Celts and Romans, up to the Middle Ages and modern times. Dedicated stations focus on the researchers of the cemetery such as Ramsauer and Simony, crafts, folklore, the history of Protestantism in the Salzkammergut, nature, and the development into a tourism and World Heritage site. Multimedia presentations, video animations and 3D displays complement the original finds.
